Where can you develop disposable cameras?

There are three real options, and they are not equivalent. A mail-in lab like ours gives you the best quality and is the only route that reliably returns your negatives. A drugstore or big-box counter is convenient to drop off, but the store is not developing anything: the camera is shipped to a central facility, often out of state. A local camera shop is a fine option if you still have a good one nearby, and fewer of them survive every year, which is why mail-in exists.

Drugstore vs. a real lab

When you hand a disposable camera to a pharmacy “lab” it goes into a bin, gets collected, and is sent to a bulk processing facility. Turnaround is usually one to two weeks and scans are low resolution. Most importantly, in many cases your negatives are not returned at all.

That matters more than it sounds. The negative is the original. A low-resolution scan from 2011 is a dead end; a negative can be rescanned at any resolution, decades later, on equipment that does not yet exist. Here every roll comes back cut and sleeved, every time, at no extra cost.

One-time-use and single-use cameras

Disposable camera, single-use camera, one-time-use camera, throwaway camera are all the same thing, and we develop all of them. Kodak FunSaver, Fujifilm QuickSnap, Ilford single-use black and white, the waterproof ones, wedding table cameras, the unbranded ones from a tourist shop. If it is a sealed camera with film inside, send it.

Cameras that have sat in a drawer for years

This is a lot of what we do. Disposable cameras turn up in house clearances, in the back of closets, in boxes after someone passes. The film is old and usually stored badly, so there is no honest way to promise a result.

What we can tell you is what to expect. Old colour negative film tends to shift magenta or yellow, contrast flattens and grain increases. Heat is worse than age: a camera that spent fifteen years in a cool cupboard will usually beat one that spent five in a hot attic. Images are very often recoverable, and we correct each frame individually rather than running a batch profile over the roll.

Common questions

Do I send the whole camera or just the film?

The whole camera, and do not try to open it as you could damage the roll inside.

Can you develop a camera that is 10 or 20 years old?

Yes, and we do it regularly. Expect colour shifts and more grain than a fresh camera. We cannot promise images will be there, but they very often are.

Do Walmart, CVS and Walgreens still develop disposable cameras?

Several still accept them at the counter, but they do not develop on site. Turnaround is typically one to two weeks and in many cases negatives are not returned. Check the policy before you hand the camera over.

How many photos are on a disposable camera?

Usually 27, sometimes 24 or 36 depending on the model. You get scans of every frame that came out, and we tell you if a roll is blank rather than quietly returning nothing.
